Am I oversensitive for considering the use of the swastika offensive or for not wanting to sit at a table with him?

Not really sure I understand what you are trying to get at here. Not an attack or anything, genuinely don't understand. :p

No, I don't think those are examples of being oversensitive. I would say my roommate (whose family has lived in America since before WWII) refusing to ever travel to Germany or associate with German people is oversensitive. :p

Oh yea, I thought it was in reference to @Nothingtown in this thread, rather than a more general post. :p

    Agree 100% with this.

Sorry, should have said general! :p Sometimes there is a whole conversation going on in my head and only a part of it gets typed! LOL #crazy

As people have stated, it's all opinionated, so it generally is my opinion on what people should be offended by or not.

I'd generally like the gentile people, of all races, would be able to accept racial diversity and differences.

If people are unable to see the difference between an ancient symbol of spiritually, and a racist Neo-nazi thug, they truly are blinded by emotion.

Being blind with emotion is not a bad thing. If millions of people targeted for nothing but their race were sought to be eradicated, as victims, we'd all be blind with emotion.

the issue here is its really easy to say things from the other side of the coin

when in truth, people would probably feel differently if it was something that had affected them

Lol! This reminds me of my grandmother. Back in Hungary, she was apart of the communist party (for the only reason of prominence). When the revolution came, she burnt all the red books. :lol2:  Still, it doesn't that I am a communist, nor is anyone by blood, only by philosophy.

Oh, gotcha thanks for clearing that up. :p My step mom is actually quite similar, she refuses to buy german cars or many german made things because of the companies association with the Nazi's and Hitler.

That's so true. When we look at views such as Sharia law, we often vilify enforcers. Their opinions would of course be the complete opposite. At the same time, I cannot level with such people. But the contrast between those directly affected and those who merely observed is monumental.

A friend of mine was actually in germany, and they met a local there who was kind of touring them around for the day...and when the local found out hey were jewish she actually apologized for what the german people had done...as if she was somehow responsible, german =/= nazi

i refuse to buy german cars cuz they are super expensive to fix :p

so many companys supported the nazis during that time youd have to abstain from a lot of stuff if you wanted to play that game

The purpose of this thread was not to get as many people butthurt as possible and it was not to tell people what they can and can't be offended by (@Dan).

I asked for opinions and then gave mine. It was my hope that people could put their butthurt aside and try explore the opinions of others. I am simply interested to know the thoughts of Jews and non-Jews on this matter. A pointless response would something like "your opinion that people shouldn't be offended because it didn't happen to you" is pointless and better left unwritten. A decent response is something like "I feel such and such because of this and that", because that allows this thread to develop into something of value.

    Edited to avoid double posting:

I do not overlook the reality that millions of innocent (and not innocent) people were murdered. However, I feel that humans need to let go in order to move forward as a race. If someone is not deliberately trying to offend you (as in the cases of the jeweller and the TV show) then why get offended? I do not think the holocaust should be forgotten, I just think that it is beneficial to all to try let go of the anger.

Belonging to a minority, I can empathise with victems of hate speech and similar acts, but having dealt with this I made the decision to not get offended by these things and quite honestly I feel great for it. Maybe it is silly to think that this attitude can only be beneficial, but hey.

If German car companies were Neo-Nazi sympathisers, then, yes, I'd agree. But such a view is quite irrational don't you think? I mean, it's like saying I'll never associate with Japanese people, because they hunt whales O_o

I'm not really at liberty to say if it is rational or irrational. I believe with her though, it is more specific companies that she has researched actually  rather than most german companies I should have said. Don't remember which ones and why exactly, but I'll ask her when I get the chance.

I seriously feel that with all of these 'opinion' topics, no one is able to respect the next person's opinion, no matter how polarised. It's a pretty big (and insensitive flaw here in Codex off-topic)

I'll be very honest with you here. I actually take offense at something like this, being German and having family that is VERY anti-Neo-Nazi. (This isn't a pointed remark or anything :p Just demonstrating how as a German I'd be upset at this)

I think, that when they're genuine, then yes. Doesn't matter how you feel about them. You may not agree, you may even hate someone else's view, but the decency of humanity is to respect your fellow man (which 99% fall short of, because everyone thinks their opinion IS right).

But of course, if an opinion isn't substantiated, thought through, meditated on or plucked from thin air, then I agree. These are people's philosophies we're dealing with here.

Yep, definitely understand that but I want to confirm exactly why it is that she doesn't buy from them. I have a feeling it must be related to some of these reasons, but again I want to ask her about this.

@Galadriel can I ask what minority group you belong to?

I think a big issue for me is that jews still suffer all over the world, and I find it is overlooked a lot because we are a "non-visible" minority

we blend in, we don't have a different skin color, and people overlook what issues we have to deal with because were not as easily identified

I had, and temporarily lived with, a friend that was pretty much a Neo Nazi. "Death to the niggers and the chinks and the Arabs!" He would shout day in and day out. He wanted to build what I'd see as a white supremist party and purge all the non-Caucasian people out of Canada.

It's weird experiencing such hate first hand. He didn't even really have a reason. He just hated everybody.

Yeah, I can see those reasons. However, if companies such as Allianz are no longer affiliated (and have denounced) Neo-Nazism, then I don't see why not. The people who once insured Auschwitz are long dead, and so are their antisemitic viewpoints.
