I've been considering programming when I subscribed on here, but I was kinda discouraged by the fact that #1; nearly everything has been done before/not sure what I could make and #2; I've just never did these specific programming skills. Only games, y'know. Never tried crawling info from webpages and letting fancy algorithms run through them. I guess a guide section/tutorial would be helpful to encourage programming activity, but I'm not sure if the effort in making a guide would be in proportion to the effect?
Also, I've modded a Harry Potter forum for years. I know some (many) won't probably apply/be very much different to this forum, but I'll leave a list of what I found in my modding time:
- people hate e-mail newsletters
- we had houses. (Friendly) team competition was the shit. We had very big events every once in a while in which you had to prove your house was the best in whichever way possible. It included site theme overhauls, fanfictions, graphics, even games (I for example made a couple of Slytherin-themed platformers).
- RPGing was really big at that forum. They all once started off as Harry Potter themed RPGs, but in the busy days none of them were even remotely related to HP anymore.
- We had quizzes and live "scavenge hunts" (I lack knowledge of a better word), also in team settings. During the scavenge hunt (Quidditch in our case) members would have to find quaffles and bludgers and the snitch, which were simply hidden images (hidden by the staff right before the start of the game) around the forum.
TL;DR: team spirit is what kept the HP forum alive long after the last movie had come out. Plus I think you guys should give RPGing a go. I love RPGs (although I'm aware nobody will probably ever participate in them
)
Gawd so sorry for my Denglish. It sounds so good in my head and then I reread it, ugh. I'm such a shitty dutchwoman
