Things I learned that my fish tank didn't teach me

I think I've learned some great life lessons. I hope that I can pass on this possessed "knowledge" and perhaps prevent others from making the same mistakes. "Knowledge" is in quotations because I have a far way to go and have come to the conclusion that I know nothing when I look at what can be learned. Perhaps, a different term is needed to better describe the right word?

So, without further ado, I present you with what I've learned through life's journey.

1. The most important thing that can be done is to question anything you read or hear. The only way that one can learn is through questioning. Even when you think you understand something, question it anyway.
EX:There was this time where I thought I understood what was being asked on a paper so I proceeded to do the long paper without asking the teacher what they wanted. My interpretation of the instructions turned out to be completely wrong and I ended up getting a 70 on the paper. Had I asked, the grade would have been higher.

2. It is hard writing in a voice that is not your own. Just be yourself. You'll find writing easier and enjoy yourself a lot more.
EX: When I first started writing, I didn't know who I was so I hid behind different styles. I still don't know how people can recognize my style from others but hey, its better than nothing. I, no longer, feel the need to hide behind my writing and expressing myself is now much easier. The only way for others to find your voice is if you allow it to develop on its own.

3. Making someone's day doesn't take much.
EX: A few years ago, my birthday was going horrible. I had gone through the majority of the day without being wished a happy birthday. I checked the mail and there was a letter for me. Inside was a birthday card and money. I can't remember what I spent the money on but its long been gone. The card? I still have it.

4. There is nothing more welcoming than human touch.
EX: I've realized that no matter how bad my day is going, a simple pat on the pack or a hug and a smile would brighten up my day almost instantly. I've had some pretty bad days and the combination of a hug and a smile brightened up my day, whether the individual knew it or not. Thank you.

5. Always back up your work.
EX: As I was writing this list, my document froze. This hasn't been the first time it's happened. I've lost my work before. It's not fun. Better safe than sorry.

6. I've learned that the people I care about most in life are taken too soon.
EX: As a child, I was close with my grandfather. I would ride his horses, chase chickens, and eat mangos and coconuts. When I was twelve, he died. I've lost a few people by failing to keep contact with them. I, no longer, have their numbers or any contact information. I hope I can maintain contact with the people I care about. I really do care about them.

7. Don't fear mistakes.
EX: I've come to the conclusion that the more I try to prevent mistakes, the more mistakes happen. Hubbard showed great wisdom when he said, "The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one".

8. If I could take it all back, I wouldn't.
EX: Everything in my life has lead to something else. Some great times, some bad times. However, I learned that thinking about any past situations doesn't get me anywhere. As such, I decide to live in the present.

9. Learn to say no. People will understand.
EX: I used to be the type of person who said yes to everything. As a result, I was overstressed and barely had enough time on my hand. Say yes, only when you know you can handle it.

10. Keep everything in perspective.
EX: Looking back on the past few years, I've noticed I blow quite a few things out of proportion. A few months from now, it won't matter what I got on a test or why I can't go to a friend's house for the weekend. In the end, none of it will be remembered.

11. Experience is the best teacher.
EX: Nothing can beat experience. I've gone a year without actively using Photoshop and InDesign. Looking back on it, I can not remember how to use some shortcuts.

12. I have many more lessons to learn.
